Provides physical conditioning, reconditioning, risk factor reduction, and education by prescribing, conducting, and evaluating cardiovascular exercise programs and physical exercise under the supervision of a physician.
Manages appropriate vital responsibilities, including heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Administers and documents cardiovascular assessments, single channel electrocardiogram (EKG), rhythm assessments, and oxygen saturation assessments. Conducts controlled investigations of cardiac responses and adaptations to muscular activity. Assesses heart disease symptoms.
Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams depending on patient needs, including but not limited to: cardiac nurses, cardiologists, cardiac team, bariatrics, and other Sanford metro area cardiac departments. Provide education to patients. Monitors the electrocardiogram (EKG) that patients wear. Monitors patient's blood pressure. Monitors heart rate using EKG equipment during diagnostic or therapeutic procedures to notify the provider if something appears wrong. Identifies common heart medications, determines, and monitors appropriate cardiac response.
Performs dietary intake assessments and counsels on modifications needed and refers to dietitian as necessary to achieve goals. Conducts weight management assessments and calculates body mass index (BMI) to determine proper category; develops goals for weight loss. May assist with exercise stress tests depending on facility capabilities. Within scope of practice, review values of lipid tests such as low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), Total Cholesterol, and Triglycerides. Assists with Diabetes Management and Tobacco Cessation programs. Develops risk reduction and behavior modification plans to minimize future risk of heart disease.
Scope of responsibility may begin to expand based on program development and implementation, including peripheral artery disease, cardiovascular assessments, and exercise tolerance measurements. Dependent on facility, exposed to pulmonary rehabilitation regarding lung disease, risk factors, and exercise programs. Demonstrates an open and positive demeanor at expanding opportunities for growth within their roles.
Checks documents thoroughly according to standard processes and procedures.;Provides effective technical solutions to routine functional challenges via sound technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues.;Adheres to organizational policies and guidelines for intake assessment.;Adheres to established technical standards and procedures for electrocardiography.;Monitors progress; observes any problematic behaviors regarding patient safety and takes action.;Evaluate patient functioning, capabilities, or health.;Assess physical performance requirements to aid in the development of individualized recovery or rehabilitation exercise programs.;Follows relevant policies and standards when providing care for cardiac patients.;
Bachelors degree in physical education, exercise science, corporate fitness, human biology or related field of study is required.
Experience working with cardiac rehab patients is preferred, as well as experience in assisting and designing specific
experience programs for individuals. Understands physiological basis of activity and ability to prescribe and instruct exercise.
Knowledge of American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary
Rehabilitation (AACVPR) guidelines is preferred. Thorough understanding of the physiological basis of activity and ability to
prescribe and instruct exercise according to ACSM and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) guidelines.
Experience in any of the following areas is a plus: administering cardiovascular assessments, monitoring telemetry ability to
take blood pressure; working with coronary heart disease, risk factors, pulmonary rehabilitation, cardiac medications, and
Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
