JOB SUMMARY

Serves as the organization's primary in-house legal counsel in support of subsidiary corporations that provide health plans, third party administration, and wellness services and products. This position will be responsible for identifying and analyzing both complex and routine legal day-to-day health plan and administrative issues as well as integrate with and into, the Sanford Health Plan executive leadership team. This position will be expected to, among other things, serve as the subject matter expert and key resource for researching and analyzing legal issues related health plans and TPA and other administrative services; monitor and interpret applicable legal and regulatory requirements and developments; collaborate with staff to review, analyze and assure that plan documents are complete and accurate; contract review and negotiation; complete health care business transactions; and manage respective outside counsel services.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform administrative and management functions related to the practice of law. Confer with colleagues with specialties in appropriate areas of legal issue to establish and verify bases for legal proceedings. Understands medical terminology and code of ethics associated with the industry. Applies appropriate confidentiality and the sense of urgency in confidential investigation. Collaborates with other functions to handle claims outside of expertise. Identify implications for cases from legal precedents or other legal information. Interpret laws, rulings and regulations for individuals and businesses. Advise clients concerning business transactions, claim liability, advisability of prosecuting or defending lawsuits, or legal rights and obligations. Analyze the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents. Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

QUALIFICATIONS

J.D. from an accredited law school.

Generally requires a minimum of four years of experience, preferably in a corporate law department, law firm or government agency specializing in managed care or insurance regulatory and compliance experience.

Must have passed the bar exam in the state in which they are practicing and be admitted, or eligible for admission to the State Bar.
