The laboratory of Dr. Kevin Francis in the Cellular Therapies and Stem Cell Biology Group at Sanford Research has an open position for a Research Specialist.

The successful applicant will work on research projects assessing the role of lipid metabolism in regulating cellular function and developmental signaling. Projects will allow the individual to gain expertise in a number of developmental and functional assays using both cultured cells and transgenic animal models. They will also assist other researchers by performing research and experimentation following established protocols within the laboratory. The hired individual will have the opportunity to learn a number of highly transferrable skills, will make intellectual contributions to current research activities and contribute to the design of experiments, possibly develop new techniques, and be responsible for some aspects of project management.

The Research Specialist will work within our multidisciplinary and dynamic team to help drive these neurobiology studies forward in both cellular and animal models. Applicants with experience in neurobiology, mammalian cell culture, qRT-PCR and exhibiting strong molecular biology skills are strongly encouraged to apply. However, qualified individuals with a drive to succeed and willingness to learn will be considered.

Job Summary

The successful applicant will work on research projects assessing the role of lipid metabolism in regulating cellular function and developmental signaling. Projects will allow the individual to gain expertise in a number of developmental and functional assays using both cultured cells and transgenic animal models. Will assist other researchers by performing research and experimentation following established protocols within the laboratory. Will perform routine lab and equipment maintenance. Will set-up and operate various scientific instruments. Projects will involve assays on both in vitro cell culture models, including primary isolation of cells types from rodents and in vivo analysis of mouse models over time. The hired individual will have the opportunity to learn a number of highly transferrable technical skills. Will make intellectual contributions to current research activities and contributes to the design of experiments, possibly development of new techniques, and be responsible for some aspects of project management. Conducts tests, assays and other protocols as needed and under supervision.

Will properly document experiments and procedures. Will analyze results, present data in small group settings, and help with dissemination of results through publication of findings. Will independently review and research current literature related to ongoing research projects with supervision by the principal investigator.

Experience with common laboratory procedures, techniques, and skills is required. Experience with mammalian cell culture, qRT-PCR, and other molecular biology techniques is highly desirable.

May be expected to perform more complex scientific techniques, such as isolation and maintenance of various neuronal and astrocyte cell types in culture, performing assays to quantify cell function and health. Will perform studies involving animal models, including animal handling, tissue isolation, and behavioral studies. May be trained in additional techniques specific to the research program as needed.

As a multi-site institution, rare local travel between sites may be required.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a clinical, health or life science field is required.

Demonstrated prior experience and competence in a similar research environment is preferred. Previous research experience in molecular biology, neurobiology, cell biology, and/or rodent models is preferred.
