The Sanford USD Medical Center Core Laboratory is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team. This person will provide technical leadership for our Laboratory operations and mentorship for our Laboratory team. The laboratory manager will oversee the operations of a highly progressive automated laboratory with modernized equipment. The Core Laboratory has multiple departments which includes Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Chemistry/Immunochemistry, Flow Cytometry, and Rapid Molecular. The Core Laboratory has a strong supporting structure of talented supervisors, lead technologists and competent laboratorians. The USD Medical Center Laboratory has a cooperative and collaborative leadership team.

Job Summary

Responsible for providing administrative leadership and expertise to the laboratory department. Develops and monitors appropriate indicators for quality and continuous improvement. Manages the operations of the departments including human resources, budget and finance, short and long range planning, legal and regulatory compliance. Will effectively interview, hire, counsel, and discipline and, when needed, terminate employees. Responsible for providing professional and technical expertise. Responsible for implementing the vision and mission, plan and standards of the organization within the departments. Accountable for the laboratory environment. Expected to contribute to the strategic planning process, day-to-day operations and attainment of goals of the organization. May oversee employees who must utilize appropriate age-related patient care protocols related to the physical and psychological needs of patients. May collect and process lab specimens and performs clinical laboratory testing, including manual and automated methods, in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures. May be responsible for pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing. Ensures all medical laboratory safety standards and quality requirements are met. Serves as a laboratory resource to other health care personnel. Serves as liaison between technical staff and laboratory leadership, as well as communicating issues and concerns to appropriate personnel. Must utilize critical and independent judgment in decision-making and problem-solving. Acts as point-person to technical staff and responds to questions and provides direction. Will be responsible for providing leadership in the day to day operations of the laboratory. Must work closely and collaborate with the department medical chair and other department leadership to oversee areas of responsibility. Must collaborate with other departments across the organization and enterprise. May have fiscal responsibility for areas of accountability. Required to maintain a positive work environment for the laboratory staff that develops a team approach to optimize work flow, improve customer satisfaction and reduce errors. May be required to travel to other enterprise locations.


Bachelors degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences required.

Five years laboratory related experience required. Must have at least two years of leadership/management experience.

Possess a national laboratory certification or laboratory specialty certification through an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); or be registry eligible. If working in North Dakota (ND), must be licensed by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice. May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
