JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction, performs technical procedures in the Medical Genetics and Genomics Laboratory in a manner that ensures accurate and reliable clinical results. Runs complex pieces of equipment requiring advanced specialized training. Performs specialized testing such as real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Sanger sequencing, and Next Generation sequencing. Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains equipment and lab area. Utilizes knowledge of scientific process and specific laboratory protocols. Possesses the ability to measure, troubleshoot, and report clinical results. Comprehends numeric concepts and performs numeric calculations. Ability to work collaboratively with research and/or clinical group or team. Actively participates in the development and revision of standard operating procedures and policies. Laboratory specialists are those individuals who have significant experience in sub-specialty areas within the laboratory. For example: genome wide screening array expertise, whole genome Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) microarray, tissue cultures, cytogenetics, etc. Collaborates with other Leads among various divisions of the Medical Genetics Laboratory to improve quality and efficiency. Acts as reliable resource for more junior members of the lab and assists with their training and development where appropriate. Will participate in on-call schedule during non-business hours for monitoring and responding to alarms form temperature monitoring system. Assist with verifying competencies of staff within the Accessioning and Processing Division. Assists with education and training of staff on sample accessioning, processing, and storage. Assist in developing procedure and processes for regulatory inspections. Demonstrates expertise and leadership in the existing laboratory within the area where the lead role is being offered. A Cytogenetics Lead will perform cross-training of staff to competency level in Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH) testing, karyotyping, microarray bench work and analysis, and/or other subspecialized areas within the Cytogenetics division. Assists with writing and reviewing standard operating procedures related to the Cytogenetics Division on a regular basis and suggest changes as needed. Assists with verifying competencies of staff within the Cytogenetics Division. Develops and maintains ongoing Quality Assurance metrics within their area of subspecialty (e.g., FISH, microarray). This will include short term (e.g., batch to batch) or long term (e.g., monitoring trends over weeks/months) monitoring, or working directly with vendor technical support personnel to troubleshoot technical or software issues as they occur. Works in tandem with the Cytogenetics Manger and Cytogenetic Director(s) to evaluate the lead role and its responsibilities as they evolve over time.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Evaluates the accuracy of results obtained from clinical laboratory tests.

Designs a standard operating procedure, detailing steps and activities, within

a department. Performs routine disinfection activities on laboratory instruments,

devices and equipment. Operates genetic diagnostic tools and technologies.

Verify that molecular genetics and related equipment and instrumentation is

maintained in working condition to ensure accuracy and quality of experimental

results. Extract deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or perform diagnostic tests

involving processes such as gel electrophoresis and polymerase chain reaction

analysis. Evaluate genetic data by performing appropriate mathematical or

statistical calculations or analyses. Develops successful resolutions to

critical or wide-impact problems. Trains others on the appropriate operation of

medical laboratory equipment. Archive case documentation and study materials as

required by regulations and laws. Implements a variety of cross-checking approaches

and mechanisms. Advises on diagnosing and resolving laboratory

equipment malfunctions. Utilizes quality control techniques to monitor and

maintain laboratory equipment. Maintains Clinical Laboratory Improvement

Amendments (CLIA) and Collage of American Pathologists (CAP) standards.

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

Schedule is Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in a clinical, health, or life science field is required; Master's degree preferred.

Minimum of six years of clinical laboratory experience is required. Genetics laboratory experience is preferred. Experience with techniques commonly used in a clinical genetics laboratory such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing is required.

Certification or eligibility for certification with American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required within 12 months from date of hire. Eligibility for certification as a Clinical Specialist in Molecular laboratory genetics is desirable.
