JOB SUMMARY

Performs daily imaging and delivers daily prescribed therapeutic radiation doses to radiation therapy patients safely and accurately. The therapist incorporates their technical knowledge of the equipment and expertise of clinical treatment set-up, anatomical landmarks, treatment recording and management during patient care. The therapist must be able to interact effectively and accurately with patients and their family members, physicians, healthcare workers, and radiation oncology department personnel. Possesses the skills and knowledge necessary to be proficient in accurate delivery of prescribed doses of radiation, safety of patient during treatment, and documentation of patient care in the patient treatment record and inpatient chart (if applicable). A patients sensitivity and confidentiality must be practiced at all times with adherence all HIPAA compliance standards. The therapist develops an understanding of the patients physical and emotional status and reports that to the appropriate staff. Ability to work with growth and development needs of all client populations.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Explains the importance of creating a supportive environment for cancer patients. Seeks the appropriate experts to obtain information or ask questions. Evaluates the accuracy of results obtained from clinical laboratory tests. Administer prescribed doses of radiation to specific body parts, using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards. Maintain records, reports, or files are required, including such information as radiation dosages, equipment settings, or patients' reactions. Educate, prepare, and reassure patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance and reinforcing physicians' advice regarding treatment reactions or post-treatment care. Review prescription, diagnosis, patient chart, and identification. Monitors all releases of patient information for compliance with HIPAA and other privacy laws. Check for all side effects, such as skin irritation, nausea, or hair loss to assess patients' reaction to treatment. Help physicians, radiation oncologists, or clinical physicists to prepare physical or technical aspects of radiation treatment plans, using information about patient condition and anatomy.

QUALIFICATIONS

Registration in radiation therapy with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is required. If working in North Dakota (ND), and performing medical imaging or radiation therapy procedures, licensure in the modality of radiation therapy through the North Dakota Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Board (NDMIRT) is required.
