Responsible for providing administrative leadership and expertise to the laboratory department. Develops and monitors appropriate indicators for quality and continuous improvement. Manages the operations of the departments including human resources, budget and finance, short and long range planning, legal and regulatory compliance. Will effectively interview, hire, counsel, and discipline and, when needed, terminate employees. Responsible for providing professional and technical expertise. Responsible for implementing the vision and mission, plan and standards of the organization within the departments. Accountable for the laboratory environment. Expected to contribute to the strategic planning process, day-to-day operations and attainment of goals of the organization. May oversee employees who must utilize appropriate age-related patient care protocols related to the physical and psychological needs of patients. May collect and process lab specimens and performs clinical laboratory testing, including manual and automated methods, in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures. May be responsible for pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing. Ensures all medical laboratory safety standards and quality requirements are met. Serves as a laboratory resource to other health care personnel. Serves as liaison between technical staff and laboratory leadership, as well as communicating issues and concerns to appropriate personnel. Must utilize critical and independent judgement in decision-making and problem-solving. Acts as point-person to technical staff and responds to questions and provides direction. Will be responsible for providing leadership in the day to day operations of the laboratory. Must work closely and collaborate with the department medical chair and other department leadership to oversee areas of responsibility. Must collaborate with other departments across the organization and enterprise. May have fiscal responsibility for areas of accountability. Required to maintain a positive work environment for the laboratory staff that develops a team approach to optimize work flow, improve customer satisfaction and reduce errors. May be required to travel to other enterprise locations.
Adheres to established internal standards and procedures abstracted from Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Adheres to relevant policies and ethics for clinical laboratory testing. Assists in the collection and preparation of required budget information. Coaches others to develop stronger change management skills and greater comfort with change. Develops a culture in which all members work constructively to improve the performance of individuals and the team. Maintains current certifications in specialty and continues education when necessary. Presents a professional image, especially when dealing with customers. Promotes organizational learning through knowledge management, training and development, and sharing key experiences. Seeks opportunities to help others learn as teacher, coach, and mentor.
This is a full time position of 80 hours per two week pay period working primarily day shift with various shift times. This position will rotate between all three campuses, which include: Sanford Medical Center Fargo, Sanford Medical Center Broadway and Sanford Medical Center South University.

Possess a national laboratory certification or laboratory specialty certification through an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); or be registry eligible. If working in North Dakota (ND), must be licensed by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice. May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Bachelors degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences required. Five years laboratory related experience required. Mus have at least two years of leadership/management experience.
