Job Summary

The Labor Relations Specialist leads the day-to-day field activity of the Labor Relations function across all Sanford Health. In conjunction with Human Resources (HR) and operations leadership, this role will develop and recommend labor relations bargaining objectives and develop bargaining plans for each Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Establishes and maintains effective labor-management relations at all levels. Interprets the collective bargaining agreements. Supports/administers/counsels leaders in response to the escalation of grievances including arbitrations. Assists all levels of management on labor matters to ensure compliance with CBAs.

Analyzes collective bargaining agreements to develop interpretation of intent, spirit and terms of contract to ensure proper compliance and competitive positioning for negotiations. This includes, preparation of statistical reports, using internal records related to labor relations activities to develop strategic bargaining proposals and/or proactive solutions to current issues.

Provides internal clients and departments with interpretation and communication of changes in CBA wages, benefits information and other contractual terms. In addition, brainstorms solutions to complicated situations and executes research and resolution of certain contractual disputes and obligations.

Furnishes information such as reference documents and statistical data concerning labor legislation, labor market conditions, prevailing union and management practices, wage and salary surveys and employee benefit programs for use in review of current contract provisions and proposed changes.

Provides expertise to support or conduct training sessions related to labor relations, benefits, employee engagement or effective leadership principles.

Utilizes strong contract analysis and interpretation abilities. Demonstrates knowledge in a variety healthcare concepts, practices and procedures. Handles confidential information in a mature and professional manner. Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. Displays strong attention to detail and accuracy. Exhibits excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Juris Doctorate degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources, labor or related field required or eight years’ relevant experience.

Minimum eight years’ experience in the labor relations field or a related industry.

Experience in leading labor negotiations and responding to union organizing attempts is preferred.

Labor Relations experience within a healthcare setting strongly preferred.

Thorough knowledge of National Labor Relations and other related federal and state laws.

Advanced experience and skills with Excel, Word, PowerPoint and other Office software tools required.

Advanced written and verbal communication skills required.

Current valid driver’s license, and must meet all medical guidelines for Sanford Health Category III drivers.
