Provides genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders; supports patients and families dealing with emotional and psychological problems related to disorder. Gathers patient information such as historical records and family health conditions for medical assessment. Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risk, benefit, and cost. Educates patients and health professionals about genetic disorders; ensures appropriate patient referral and care. Reviews implications with the patient and provides crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions.


This position will implement genetic counseling services among 3 internal medicine clinics and hold responsibility for establishing and growing provider and nursing relationships. The position will also be involved in promoting our imagentics program, which connects patients with their own genetic roadmap through the Sanford Chip. This position also offers great potential to practice in a variety of other sub-specialty clinics.


Must be board certified through the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) upon hire. If candidates are new graduates, documentation of graduation from an accredited program must be provided upon hire; candidates are then given 4 years from graduating date to sit for respective certification. Requires a minimum of a Master of Science from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). Must fulfill the expectations for Genetic Counselor as outlined by the ABGC. The incumbent must possess extraordinary communication skills, both verbal as well as written. The ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses, and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client is essential.
