Sanford Health currently has three open positions for clinical Genetic Counselors in Fargo, North Dakota.
We are looking for genetic counselors to join our team in the following clinical areas: Pediatrics, Oncology, and our Imagenetics program, which integrates genetic counseling and precision medicine into primary care. There are additional opportunities for growth and program development in other specialty areas.
Must be board-certified or have active candidate status through the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) upon hire. Current students, new graduates, and experienced genetic counselors are encouraged to apply.

The Genetic Counselor provides genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for heredity disorders; supports patient and families dealing with emotional and psychological problems related to disorder.
Gathers patient information such as historical records and family health conditions for medical assessment. Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risk, benefit, and cost. Educates patients and health professionals about genetic disorders; ensures appropriate patient referral and care. Reviews implications with the patient and provides crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions.
Ability to operate in clinic and laboratory settings and collaborate between the two. In laboratory settings, the Genetic Counselor reviews literature and translates to reports, reviews family histories to assess particular issues, and interacts with colleagues to coordinate with lab techs and directors on reporting of results. In clinic settings, the Genetic Counselor reviews literature and translates to patients, reviews family histories to assess for genetic risks, and collaborates with physicians and nurses on reporting of patients.
Assess patients' psychological or emotional needs such as those relating to stress, fear of test results, and financial issues to make referral recommendations or assist patients in managing test outcomes. Demonstrates experience participating in productive collaborative processes. Interview patients or review medical records to obtain comprehensive patient or family medical histories, and document findings. Avoids technical jargon when inappropriate. Interpret laboratory results and communicate findings to patients of physicians. Utilizes quality control techniques to monitor and maintain laboratory equipment. Determine or coordinate treatment plans by requesting laboratory services, reviewing genetics or counseling literature, and considering histories or diagnostic data. Creates secure access to laboratory results and their interpretations in a patient-focused manner. Educates patients, families, and colleagues on areas of genetic knowledge pertaining to their specific health concerns. Explains possible course of action for patients with genetic and/or psychological conditions. Educates patients and colleagues on the possibility of developing or transmitting inherited diseases.
Master of Science from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) is required.
Fulfills expectations for Genetic Counselor as outlined by the ABGC.
State licensure and/or temporary license is required at time of hire.
Board certification through the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) is required upon hire. If candidates are new graduates, documentation of graduation from an accredited program must be provided upon hire; candidates are then given four years from graduating to sit for respective certification.
