This is a full-time opportunity. Schedule includes Daytime hours, 8 hours shifts, between 4:30am-4:30pm. Rotating weekends, on-call, and holidays.


Receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special examinations. Performs complex histological procedures using techniques to gross, embed, perform microtomy, and stain to make tissue slides used for diagnosis. Responsible to review slide quality. Maintains and repairs lab instruments. Disinfects work area and stocks supplies. Ensures all lab safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. Will work with self-discipline and good judgment while following established standards of practice. Must utilize critical and independent judgement in decision-making and problem solving. May be required to interact with all ages of client population. Will be responsible for performing routine duties in all areas of the Histology Laboratory. Recognize responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interact with respect for their jobs and patient care. Assist in writing and reviewing current and new procedures in the department as well as changes in general hospital policy and procedures. Take part and actively participate with quality assurance and performance improvement activities associated with the laboratory.


Adheres to established internal standards and procedures abstracted from Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Adheres to laboratory policies and ethics for clinical specimen preparation. Identifies available resources and support systems for troubleshooting. Maintains a safe working environment, including proper handling of materials and equipment. Maintains current certifications in specialty and continues education when necessary. Monitors the integrity of medical specimens according to testing purposes and requirements. Operates and calibrates equipment in a basic laboratory environment. Presents a professional image, especially when dealing with customers. Promotes organizational learning through knowledge management, training and development, and sharing key experiences. Reviews staining results vs. test requirements; documents and organizes stain results. Uses suitable dyes and tools to stain a specimen. Utilizes quality control techniques to monitor and maintain laboratory equipment. Works with quality assurance methods, tools and techniques.


Must have completed an accredited program or one year of on the job training (OTJ) in reference to the Health and Human Services (HHS) approved program/certification. For example, American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in their field of work. Obtain certification within one year from the time they reach eligibility to complete the licensure/registry exam. For those who received OTJ training, must have worked one year to become eligible and complete the license/registry exam. Bachelor's degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences required. Prior histology experience preferred.
