Obtain laboratory specimens for processing and perform other testing in a professional manner from hospital, clinic and nursing home patients to ensure quality results in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards. Collects and manages samples of blood and specimens from patients; ensures patient safety during the sample collection process. Records and documents patient information accurately. Follows all standard procedures and safety regulations; deploys asepsis techniques during phlebotomy procedures. Communicates with patients, collecting their health information and answering their questions regarding phlebotomy procedures.
Listens and responds to safety inquiries from the patient and/or family. Identifies standards and procedures associated with medical specimen collection and processing. Identifies quality and safety issues regarding medical specimen collection and processing. Follows pre-established patient safety guidelines. Adheres to established internal standards and procedures abstracted from Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Understands the importance of documenting patient health information. Participates in collecting and processing specimens (e.g. blood) according to test requests. Maintains cleanliness or sterilization of self and objects in order to prevent infections.
This is a part time position working 24 hours a pay period with varying shifts.
High school diploma or General Educational Development Diploma (GED) required.
Previous work experience in a medical setting is beneficial. Basic knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology.
Completion of a formal phlebotomy program, phlebotomy experience, and experience in a laboratory-related field preferred. May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
