Compounds and dispenses medical prescriptions; maintains drug inventory and stock control systems under the direct supervision of pharmacists to ensure clinical and administrative effectiveness. Assists pharmacists in compounding, preparing and dispensing medical prescriptions to the public after receiving information from clients, customers or patients according to written/faxed prescriptions. Uses computers to enter, access or retrieve data; establishes and maintains patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients and all new prescription and/or refill requests. Maintains proper storage and security conditions for drugs; controls inventory stock level and timeline to ensure adequate supplies. Coordinates departmental quality assurance and other client-focused services with supervisory staff; creates and maintains a safe working environment and conditions that adhere to state laws and regulations.
Medical Center Pharmacy
In a medical center or institutional setting, the Pharmacy Technician duties consist of unit dose dispensing, IV admixtures, compounding and automated dispensing devices. Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and assists in resolution of equipment maintenance and repair. Responsible for assisting the pharmacist in the provision of pharmaceutical care to the patients of Sanford by following established regulations, standards and practices (including the preparation of IV admixtures). Must possess the skills necessary to understand written policies and procedures, perform various functions under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and participate in departmental problem-solving when needed. Must demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills and be able to learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves. Assists with billing related functions. May assist with departmental quality assurance and other customer- or patient-focused services with oversight from supervisory staff; assists in the creation and maintenance of a safe working environment and conditions that adhere to state laws and regulations. Requires use of and proficiency in multiple computer programs.
Must maintain annual registration as a Pharmacy Technician through the respective State Board of Pharmacy, as well as complete the required hours of Pharmacy Technician continuing education. If has not already attained, must attain National Certification (CPhT) within 12 months of hire. Achievement of Pharmacy Technology Diploma from an accredited Pharmacy technician program preferred. Must have appropriate education in order to become registered in the respective state of practice. This may include: enrollment in or completion of an approved on-the-job training program, completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician Program or any other acceptable qualifications or means that are approved by the respective State Board of Pharmacy and employing pharmacy, this may be based on previous work experience, training, or personal qualifications. Must complete yearly USP 797 training/testing.
