Job Summary

Receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special examinations. Performs complex histological procedures using techniques to gross, embed, perform microtomy, and stain to make tissue slides used for diagnosis. Associate Histology Technician: Performs histological procedures to embed, stain, and mount samples using routine and special techniques to make tissue slides used for diagnosis. Examines specimen slides; enters and tracks result information and generates result reports. Maintains and repairs lab instruments. Sterilizes work area and stocks supplies. Ensures all lab safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. Will work with self-discipline and good judgment while following established standards of practice. Will be responsible for performing routine duties in all areas of the Histology Laboratory. May be required to interact

with all ages of client population. Recognize responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interact with respect for their jobs and patient care. Keep abreast of new procedures in the department as well as changes in general hospital policy and procedures.

Histology Technician: Responsible to review slide quality. Maintains and repairs lab instruments. Disinfects work area and stocks supplies. Ensures all lab safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. Will work with self-discipline and good judgment while following established standards of practice. Will be responsible for performing routine duties in all areas of the Histology Laboratory. May be required to interact with all ages of client population. Recognize responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interact with respect for their jobs and patient care. Keep abreast of new procedures in the department as well as changes in general hospital policy and procedures.

Histology Technologist: Responsible to review slide quality. Maintains and repairs lab instruments. Disinfects work area and stocks supplies. Ensures all lab safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. Will work with self-discipline and good judgment while following established standards of practice. Must utilize critical and independent judgement in decision-making and problem solving. May be required to interact with all ages of client population. Will be responsible for performing routine duties in all areas of the Histology Laboratory. Recognize responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interact with respect for their jobs and patient care. Assist in writing and reviewing current and new procedures in the department as well as changes in general hospital policy and procedures. Take part and actively participate with quality assurance and performance improvement activities associated with the laboratory.

Qualifications

Associate Histology Technician: Associates degree required. Licensure will be required to obtain within 2 years of employment.

Histology Technician: Associates degree required. Possess a national certification as a Histology Technician from an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Histology Technologist: Bachelor's degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences required. Prior histology experience preferred. Possess a national certification as a Histology Technician from an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or must be registry eligible.
