Hours Per Shift: 12 hr


Assists in the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with pulmonary disorders; analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimen collections along with lung capacity measurements of patients.  May include collecting sputum, blood and breath specimens for diagnosis and analysis. Performs regular assessments of patients and the equipment they are using in order to adjust oxygen levels as needed.  Analyzes patients' blood and other specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide and other gases.  Measures the patients lung capacity to determine if there are any impairments.  Offers diagnosis results and treatment suggestions based on the analysis of the patient.


Work hours include day shifts, night shifts, weekends, and holidays. The responsibility of taking on call" shifts will be shared with other staff members. Respiratory care is delivered to all types of patients of all ages and includes inpatients, outpatients, and those at offsite locations."


Must have passed the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Certification Examination for Entry Level Respiratory Therapists to become a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) prior to employment. Within 4 months of employment, must have passed the National Board for Respiratory Care examination to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Must maintain active status with the NBRC. Must have a current South Dakota License for Respiratory Care Practitioner. Must be a graduate of a CoARC approved program of Respiratory Care. Must fulfill annual continuing education requirements of the department. Must complete orientations, competency validations, and other in-servicing as required by the department and hospital.
