JOB SUMMARY

Perform preliminary screening examinations and/or tests to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment by the physician. Assist the physician with procedures and care of the patient. Collects subjective and objective ophthalmic data from the patient or caregiver and communicates this data to the provider. Participates in the eye care of patients by providing data to licensed health care professionals; and following through on the patientΓÇÖs plan of care. Relays the providerΓÇÖs instructions for eye care to the patient, or caregiver, by transmission of specifically defined information. Maintains stock of medications, instruments, equipment and contact lenses. Schedules surgery, imaging tests, laboratory tests and other procedures. Serves as a liaison between patients, families, physicians and medical support staff in answering and directing phone calls. Will create an electronic patient file, verify patient information, provide, scan and route necessary patient forms and documents. May schedule patient appointments, arrange interpreter services, check patients in/out, and offer patient enrollment to electronic resources for patients and provide after visit summary. Displays professionalism and promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation. Must be able to work as part of a team and also independently. Excellent time management, organization and communication skills (written and verbal) are required. Knowledge of organizational policies, office management practices and computer applications. Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations. Must always maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. This position may have access to medications for purposes of distribution to licensed personnel.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Administers ophthalmic drops and ointments as ordered. Performs minor eye testing including non-automated lensometer, visual fields, visual acuity, color vision, keratometry, stereoacuity testing, A-scan, applanion tonometry, pachymetry, corneal topography, ocular coherence tomography, funduc photography (non-angiography) automated refractor error, Potential Acuity Meter measurements, Amsler grid, and laser interferometry. Provides patient information regarding contact lens application and care, routine eye care, wellness care, and preventive care. Submits pathology specimens. Prepares instruments for reprocessing. Obtains preauthorization's. Assists providers with laser treatments and minor in-clinic invasive ophthalmic procedures. May also coordinate provider schedule, resolve work queue issues and manage recall and waitlists. Must be able to collect co-pay and/or payment on patient accounts. Must understand procedures and opening/end of day protocols. Proficiently operates a multi-line telephone, computer, copier, fax machine, scanner, and webcam, as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification as Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) is required within 12 months of date into position. Obtains and maintains Basic Life Support competency within one year of hire. High School graduation or GED is required.
