JOB SUMMARY

Assists nursing personnel with a variety of patient care activities and related services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Performs under the supervision of a RN or LPN. May require certification in some locations. Assists patients in daily living tasks such as hygiene, dressing, feeding, positioning, exercising, etc. Assists with personal hygiene, takes vital signs and changes bed linens. May serve and collect food trays and provide for between-meal nourishment. Transfers patients in and out of bed or wheelchair using proper tools when necessary. Assist patients with ambulation and mobility. Maintains stock of medical supplies needed for registered nurse or physician. Complies with all patient duties assigned.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Patient Care Assistant in Pulmonary works under the direct supervision of a Pulmonary Registered Nurse to assist with general nursing care of patients aging from adolescence to geriatrics. Some Patient Care Assistant functions included in this role, but not limited to, include: personal hygiene, comfort, care, and safety measures, assisting with activities of daily living, and other identified tasks. The Patient Care Assistant will be responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment for the patient in rooms and in other areas of the pulmonary unit. This position may have access to medications for purposes of distribution to licensed personnel.

Job Knowledge and Skills: After a formalized orientation program will be expected to do baths, help with elimination needs, record fluid intakes and outputs, ambulate patients, vital signs, assist with med drawer exchanges, etc.(Refer to Self Assessment Checklist for complete list). Must have caring nature and demonstrate compassion to patients and families. Must work well with others and be able accept delegation from RNs. Must learn negotiation to self-schedule. Must be flexible and adaptable to changing situations and be able to work closely with RNs who will supervise all cares given.

Must have CPR training. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families and visitors and RNs. Must be able to accept direction and delegation from RNs.

When students are providing patient care, treatment, and/or services as a part of their training, any/all employees may be asked to supervise the students.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience with clerical/business services, communications equipment, and computer entry are desirable but not essential. HUA/secretarial training preferred.
