JOB SUMMARY

Provide daily husbandry for a variety of laboratory animals following specific experimental parameters. The ALAT must know and understand species specific needs and be able to follow established protocols when working with animals. Administer any necessary experimental requirements and monitor and record environmental conditions. Reduction of variables is critical to the experimental outcome so technicians must follow established operating procedures exactly. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and must be donned and removed properly to ensure effectiveness. Should understand and be able to use aseptic technique when performing a cage change to minimize transfer of potential pathogens. Understand and follow established procedures to service animal rooms and follow established room order to reduce cross contamination between rooms. Responsible for developing and maintaining breeding programs for various genetically engineered strains of mice and rats. Observe animals for abnormal behavior. Be educated on the experimental protocols to be able to distinguish between an abnormality and experimental protocol. The technician will have skill in handling and restraint in order to change cages and/or make close observations. Have the knowledge and skill to apply identification to animals as needed and must have knowledge to interpret identification schemes used by the LARF and investigators. Understand and performs quarantine procedures on incoming animals. Able to perform restrain on a variety of laboratory animals without causing injury or distress to the animal or themselves. Must be able to perform oral gavage and intraperitoneal, intramuscular, and subcutaneous injections. Able to interpret samples. Able to maintain detailed records for animal care to meet federal regulations. Records are kept on animal health, environmental parameters, environmental enrichment, sanitation, census records, and supply inventory. May be required to obtain experimental data for a research investigator. Able to operate the cage and rack washer, large double door autoclaves, bottle washer, change station, Techniplast trolley, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must obtain certification from the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science within one year of hire. High school diploma or equivalent. Prefer candidate who has interest in pursuing a career in scientific research.
