Provides spiritual guidance and support during illness, injury and/or an emergency. Performs religious services and duties. Performing crisis interventions and providing spiritual care to support patients, families and staff in coping with illness, injury and an emergency. Conducting religious services and duties including arranging worship and administering sacraments. Assisting families in arranging the details of funerals, such as establishing honor guards, determining funeral locations, arranging escorts, etc. Educating internal and external healthcare groups on spiritual and religious care and responsibilities of chaplains.
i. The hospital chaplain offers spiritual support to patients, their families and hospital staff.
ii. Committed to respect the dignity and faith tradition of each individual, and to guide and direct the spiritual climate of the institution.
iii. The pastoral care is based on an inclusive basis, open to persons of all faiths or no faith.
iv. Facilitate communication between patients and their faith communities.
v. Coordinate and collaborate with multi-disciplinary team members to facilitate comprehensive and integrated holistic care of patients and families (to include clinical ethics).
vi. Document patient care concerns and interventions.
vii. Contribute to hospital committees.
viii. Offer expertise in cultural/faith diversity, advance care planning, major life transitions, end of life medical decision-making, and grief processes.
ix. Work in a multi-staff and culturally diverse setting.
Full-time, 80 hours every 2 weeks.
Completion of an advanced degree in Divinity or Theology or its equivalency, ecclesiastical endorsement, a minimum of 4 units of clinical pastoral education, required. Must be eligible for certification in the Association of Professional Chaplains or Catholic Chaplains, or comparable professional organization. Must have a theological and psychological understanding of spiritual and human dynamics, knowledge of liturgical worship, knowledge of medical ethics, and knowledge of the pastoral counseling role in a health care setting.
